Tri Ripped or Ripped Off?

by Steve

Tri Ripped is Ben Greenfields latest training program that combines traditional triathlon training with strength training. The promise is to get you “ripped”.

I’ll be honest, when I first saw that Ben was putting this together I thought it would just be another training gimmick. With the explosive growth of strength training programs for endurance athletes over the past couple of years, I figured this was just another program or plan jumping on the “strong is good” band wagon.

300 pages of pure triathlon and strength training knowledge

Before making any more judgments, I got my hands on a copy of the program and gave it a good read. My thoughts immediately changed. The main PDF is close to 300 pages and covers all aspects of training. From start to finish, the program is an 8 month plan that can be used for triathletes training for anything from a sprint all the way up to an ironman. Don’t let the 300 pages scare you, while it loaded with great training advice, it also contains the entire training plan which takes up a lot of the pages.

Ben makes the case that most triathletes have the dreaded “Skinny Fat” body. Basically, all those miles take off the excess pounds, but with no strength training there is going to be no muscle to help you look good. This is an easy fix if you just incorporate a well rounded program. And let’s be honest, most of us got into triathlon to get in shape. This program will do it.

The PDF is broken down into 4 phases of training. (I would highly suggest printing it out or upgrading to the hard copy version.) All guesswork is removed from your daily training. Just move through the program day by day. All exercises, drills, and movements are clearly defined and the smart progression from phase 1 through phase 4 will ensure you consistantly get stronger, faster, and in the end, look good in your race kit.

Plus there are a bunch of bonuses that will cover supplements, recovery, and more.

A couple common questions that come to mind that I can hopefully answer are:

Will strength training improve my triathlon time?

This depends on where you are starting from. If you have hit a plateu in your training, I feel cross training with full body, functional strength training will help you.  Tri-Ripped strength training focuses on complimentary strength training so it will definitely help you reach your triathlon goals.

Will this program leave me more prone to injury?

Absolutely not. It has been proven time and time again that building the supporting muscles via full body functional strength training helps to reduce injury. Why do think physical therapy post injury is mainly strength training? it is to build the surrounding muscles of an injury to help the injury heal and to prevent further injury. If strength training is prescribed post injury, wouldn’t it make sense to use a healthy strength training program to reduce your risk of an injury?

Do I need a gym membership?

It seems to me a gym membership will be required unless you have a lot of equipment at home. The program starts with simple band and body weight work and progresses through more complex barbell work. If you are new to strength training, prepare to learn a lot about what it takes to look good.

Is nutrition covered in this plan?

Absolutely. Make no mistake about it. YOU CAN NOT OUT TRAIN BAD NUTRITION! and a solid plan is presented in this program.

Should I get the Digital or Hard Copy Version?

This is up to you. Because the training plan is in the almost 300 page pdf, you will most certainly want it printed out for ease of use, reference, and to write and record your workouts. I would suggest the hard copy for this reason.

Who is Ben Greenfield and why should I listen to him about triathlon AND strength training?

I knew of Ben from rockstar triathlete. He has a great training program over there with lots of super results and testimonials. I wouldn’t for a second question his triathlon training programs. But strength? It turns out that before his triathlon days, Ben was a competitive bodybuilder. While bodybuilders are not endurance athletes, they specialize in 2 main things: Looking strong via weight training, and Nutrition. So here we have a guy that knows how to eat and exercise to look good PLUS train to have amazing triathlon results. And turns out he has a proven track record as a coach too. Seems to me to be a win win.

It is a solid, well thought out program that combines proven triathlon training and complimentary strength training. If your goal is to get stronger and faster, I highly recommend this program.
